Holman Spotlight Starter Kit: Smart Garden Lighting Review

The Benefits of Garden Lighting?

As I’ve said before, garden lighting instantly changes the look and feel of your garden & backyard. The addition of garden lighting to your garden, extends the benefits of a great green outlook into the night.

The benefits are also not limited to the times you’re outside either. Having lighting in your garden outside a window, warms an interior space too. What was once a big, black pane of glass at night, becomes a picture frame to your well-lit garden outside.

Also, lighting is just one of the ways you can make the most of your outdoor area.

Smart Garden Lighting Kits

Prior to this review, my garden lighting has predominately consisted of traditional (non-smart) garden lighting, that I’d wired myself. Which has been made smart with the addition of an outdoor smart plug.

So I was keen to try out a smart lighting kit, especially one which would be great for readers who were less keen on DIY than I.

Holman Spotlight Starter Kit

I entered this review hoping for something which was easy to set up, & Holman Spotlight Starter Kit delivered. With the inbuilt connectors, getting started is easy as plugging in a kettle…but more on that later.

Edit: This kit no longer appears to be available together, fortunately the individual parts are still for sale.

Holman Spotlight Starter Kit

This particular kit contains 4 warm white spotlights (for garden lighting, you want to avoid cool white), a controller unit & a 5m extension cable.

In my setup I also used a couple of extra 1m extension cables – these can be purchased separately.

Setup & Configuration – Easy or Not?

The physical setup of Holman Spotlight Starter Kit is about as simple as it can be…with the exception of making someone else do it for you (bored kids in your house *hint*).

Holding it all together are these simple joiners. Push the parts together & screw to fix them in place.

Wiring it all together?

Wall Power Outlet –> Holman Controller–>Cable–>Light–>Cable–>Light

You get the idea, repeat for the all 4 lights.

The Smart, in Smart Outdoor Lighting.

Once you’ve got it wired together physically, now it’s time to set up the smart part of the equation. The next step is to download the required app & connect your phone to the controller box.

The Bluetooth-enabled controller & the app will meet most, if not all of your smart control needs & desires. Open the app and you’re able to turn your lights on & off, set schedules & more.

The Next Feature I’d Add.

If I were the product manager, the next feature on my list would be smart speaker integration. Adding voice control via something like Alexa or Google Home.

In my opinion, the secret to creating the best smart home is to have as few user interfaces as possible. I achieve this by integrating my smart home devices with Amazon’s Alexa.

This means that regardless of brand, after initial setup, I can control all of my smart home devices from the one place, via Alexa. “Alexa, turn on the garden lights”.

If you’re looking to create a smart home, full of devices, keep this in mind.

Holman Spotlight Starter Kit: To Buy or Not to Buy?

If your main goal is to add smart lights to your garden, without too much DIY, then this solution is one that you can’t go past.

The Holman Spotlight Starter Kit provides great warm lighting for your garden, without the need for an electrician. The setup can be completed in minimal time & you’ll able to control it all with your phone.

NB: This product was provided free of cost, for an honest & unbiased review.
