Smart Office Tech (When You’re WFH)
So you’re working from home?
It might be new for you—it was for me. I’d done the odd WFH day before, but never full-time. Thanks to COVID lockdowns, both my wife and I found ourselves permanently working from home… and I got to have some fun with smart office tech.
1. Smart Standing Desk
The first piece of smart office gear I added? A custom smart standing desk. Is it necessary? No. But is it awesome? Absolutely.
In my case, the electric motor (app-controlled) is what makes it “smart.” Switching between sitting and standing is effortless. Plus, the app offers a few bonus features:

2. Smart Lighting
I’m slightly obsessed with lighting. It can completely change the look and feel of a room—and in a home office, functionality matters too.
For workspaces, I recommend cool white smart bulbs or tunable bulbs. Pair them with a smart speaker and set up a command like:
“Alexa, it’s business time.”
3. Smart Audio (and Smart Dancing)
A big perk of working from home? No one to judge your desk dance moves.
Music gets me “in the zone” and drowns out distractions. Add a smart speaker (or two) and let the tunes roll.
Add a smart speaker to your office and play your favourite jams at full volume.
Even better, set routines:
- Start your day with a pump-up track
- Play music at lunch to signal a break

4. Smart Fan / Smart Air Conditioning
Remember how offices were always too hot or too cold? Karen was freezing, Steve was sweating, and everyone was annoyed.

And now… the real MVP of your smart office: the voice assistant.
Whether you choose Amazon Echo, Google Home, or Apple HomePod, make sure it’s compatible with your other smart tech. Once linked, you’ll be able to run your office with voice commands and pre-set routines.
